"The Basic of Music in General is a Good Song"
Suiciderock: Can you tell us something about your job?
Lex: I`m a producer. I own this studio where we are in at the moment, it`s called Cosmic Studios. I produce albums and singles for different bands. The basic stuff a producer does. This is one part of my job, but besides mixing and recording I`m engeneering the whole thing.
Suiciderock: Are you working in Tampere only?
Lex: Of course, the main work is done here in my studio in Tampere. It`s easier for us, because I know the place and the systems, but sometimes we share studios for example in Helsinki. I mean if we want to go to somewhere else we go to Helsinki as well.
Suiciderock: Can you choose the bands you are working for by yourself?
Lex: No, I can`t choose the bands I`m working with. That would be the perfect idea that you only work for bands that you really like. Of course, I know many musicians so if they say we want to do a record next year it happens that the company calls me and asks me to produce their record. So mostly it`s like this. The record label calls me and than we talk about everything.
Suiciderock: Is it difficult for you to work with a band you don`t like?
Lex: The point is that it never has happened so far. There was no band I didn`t like to work with. Every kind of music is interesting. It doesn´t matter which style it is. I will make it as good as it can be. It really doesn`t matter. I know that there are some producers who want to do only metal stuff, but that´s not for me. I like all the different kind of styles of music. I´ve been lucky with the bands I´ve been working with, but my point is not to tell the people what I like. It`s my job to make it sound good or great. It`s my job to work out the ideas with the bands. You should know I don`t have any stereo at home, because I`m surrounded by music all the time in the studio.
Suiciderock: Is there any band, dead or alive you would love to work with?
Lex: No. There is no special band I would love to work for. I really can`t name any band right now, but the band should be very eager with their music and they would be focusing on it, they would practise very hard before they go to the studio and I would like the fact that their organisation is very fine. I`m talking about it generally . Sometimes I`m lucky to have this kind of band, sometimes not. Sometimes it`s fine and the people are really enthusiastic. They listen to themselves, they listen to the producer, they listen to the record company and the cooperation works out very nicely. That´s an ideal band. Some think it`s a very boring thing, but I think it´s not. I could name you my favourites, but it would take two or three weeks. So it`s easier to explain it like this.
Suiciderock: Was it always your intention to become a producer?
Lex: No. Actually I`m a musician and a songwriter, but suddenly I noticed that this is not my cup of tea. I had a band and I guess we are still existing. I`m not a bad musician. I did it just for fun, but than I noticed that the producing thing is a good job for me, because I really know much about it. Performing and to be an artist, to stand in the glam light it`s a good way to learn something about yourself. Now it`s time to tell the others how to do the things, because I have done the mistakes already.
Suiciderock: If you would get the chance to make your band very successful, would you do it? Would you change from a producer to an artist?
Lex: No I would keep my job as a producer and composer. I wouldn´t go for the artistic side. It´s not my life to be on the road all the time. I don`t like performing that much, but this is imaginary if I would get the big chance I wouldn´t like it, it`s for somebody else out there. I prefer to be here in the studio. I need my studio. I need to stay in the background. It`s really nice. Many people know me here. It would be horrible to be noticed by everybody. I`m really happy about that.
Suiciderock: How does a normal work day look like for you?
Lex: I wake up, quite regulary around 7 or 8 o`clock in the morning. I start working at 9 or 10 o`clock, a normal working day lasts 7 to 8 hours per day for me. Than I go to produce and analyse the sounds, but there is a limit for your ears to bare the music. If it`s that loud. I think it`s very good for a human being to work like this. I`ve also done 16 hours in the past, I love to work so much, but to work that much can disvalue the result.
Suiciderock: But you can choose the time you are working?
Lex: Yes, of course, I can choose that. Sometimes I have to work more, but it`s nice if it`s maximum 8 hours per day.
Suiciderock: What are the positive and negative aspects of your job?
Lex: Positive is of course, that I love what I`m doing and negative aspects? Hm, that`s difficult I can`t really name one, because I`m so into my job. For me producing and mixing is totally interesting. So it never gets boring. Sometimes it is really heavy as you can`t really switch off your brain when you come home, it is very hard to relax after a day in the studio. It`s not like a normal job if you go to the office from 8h to 16h. It keeps on rolling in your head. It´s always in your mind what you are doing. Maybe that´s a negative thing, that I can`t "get rid" of my job.
Suiciderock: There are so many successful bands, coming from Finland at the moment, can you explain that success?
Lex: No. *laughs* I would say the only thing is that the bands in Finland have done great work and the songs are very good, the arrangements fit and the people like them. I think the basic of music in general is a good song. That´s the main thing. If it is a good song, everything works out well. And yes, Finnish bands have succeeded in this. Maybe it is just luck. *smiles*
Suiciderock: What would you do for living if you wouldn`t work as a producer?
Lex: Oh, that`s a good question. I haven`t really thought about it before. I think I would do something related to the sea. I wouldn`t work on a sailing boat, I would do a job that makes you deal with the sea and the salty water. I don`t know what exactly it would be but it would have to do with the sea.
Suiciderock: What kind of advice would you give to a young band?
Lex: I would tell them, that cooperation is really good. First they should try to cooperate with their band members, it`s work, it`s nice. It`s beautiful, but always be sure that it is work. You should really try to communicate with your band members. That will make the songs good. You have to understand that. You have to work with a lot of different people. Start as early as you can. Making music is not only about being in a band or having a contract with some record label. If a young band can understand that very early it is a good possibility for them to gain success.
Suiciderock: Your future plans?
Lex: I hope that I can work with many good bands, also next year. Maybe I can also be a part of some project to do something else besides producing. I want to create something interesting.
Suiciderock: Thank you very much that´s it.
Lex: Okay. Thank you.
