"Home is where the heart is"

Suiciderock: You are very well-known here in Finland. Can you reveal something about the band for everybody who has not heard about Sara so far?
Joa: Sure I can, we are the band called Sara, we come from a very small town called Kaskinen. Only 1500 people living there, so you can see it is really a small town. We all grew up there and started playing in the age of 12.

Suiciderock: Sara`s style was a bit different back than…
Joa: That`s right. We started with Punk Rock. When we started we were singing Finish Punkrock, a little later we started with songs from Metallica and Guns `n Roses. Our music changed within the years and here we are.

Suiciderock: You`ll released your 5th studio record. What can you tell us about the album?
Joa: We`ve come a long way and I hope that we still have the chance to make a lot more records in the future.  We are very proud on that album.

Suiciderock: What made you become a musician?
Joa: I was very impressed when I saw Guns `n Roses for the first time. I mean Slash was and is just great. I would say that he was my first big influence plus there was not so much to do in Kaskinen. So I started to play after school and so I got into that somehow.

Suiciderock: Could you please describe your bandmates?
Joa: Our bassplayer, Kristian is always “calm”, Antti, our guitarplayer always drinks a couple of beers before a gig. Andreas is still quite “fresh”, he has been with us since 2 records now.

Suiciderock: Andreas is Swedish and he didn`t speak any Finish when he joined the band. How did you communicate at the beginning?
Joa: When he started he didn`t speak Finish at all. So I always had to translate everything. It was quite funny. It`s better nowadays but I would descbribe him as the “quiet one”.

Suiciderock: Ok, so we should go on with the other guys…
Joa: Yeah, Tommi is not with us today because he is ill. But he is the smartest one. You can ask everything from Tommi. He really knows everything. And I`m left now… That`s difficult.  Try to be the leader of the band but I don`t know if I`m doing a good job or not *smiles*.

Suiciderock: Who is responsible for the songwriting?
Joa: I was responsible for the songwriting on our last record. It changes from time to time. I write the demos at home, than we go into the studio and we gather all the ideas of the other bandmembers as well and so the whole thing develops itself. The producer does a good job.

Suiciderock: Where does the inspiration come from?
Joa: I listen to a lot of calm music and I like to write about our hometown very much. We still rehearse in Kaskinen. So I`m very inspired by that place.

Suiciderock: It seems that you really have a strong relation to your hometown…
Joa: Yeah that`s true. Nobody lives there anymore, but still there is this feeling that brings us back all the time.

Suiciderock: All your songs are in your native language, Finish. Did you ever consider singing in English as well or have you done that already?
Joa: I always plan to make something in English and we are always talking about that but it`s hard to change when you have done 5 albums in Finish already. Maybe we will do that someday. Never say never.

Suiciderock: You are playing at the Helldone tonight… What can people expect from your lifeshows?
Joa: Hm, what can they expect? Tonight we are playing at the Helldonefestival at Tavastia here in Helsinki. Let`s see how this works out. There are 3 acts playing here tonight and we are first. That`s always a bit strange to be the first act. We try to make a good show, we try to stay cool also as the opening act.

Suiciderock: Your future plans for 2009?
Joa: We will play with the Synfonie Orchestra in Joensuu here in Finland. We are going to play 2 gigs with them and hopefully some more in the near future.

Suiciderock: Your personal wishes for 2009?
Joa: For myself? I should take everything more easy. I should calm down a bit.
