SARA LEE
Tampere Klubi 2007

" A Great Mix of Melodic & Slow Metal"

Suiciderock: Can you introduce your band to start the interview?
Joonas:
We are „Sara Lee" and we play gothic-rock`n roll-metal. The band consists of six guys...
Jaakko:
Yeah, 6 loonatics actually...
Joonas:
„Sara Lee" was formed in 2003. Before that the band was called „Restless". We changed the name because there were already too many bands with this name.
Jaakko:
Me and Joonas started to play together in 1995. You must know that we know each other since we were kids. His mother is my godmother. I still have this photograph from my birthday party where Joonas is one year old and I`m seven years old. In the picture Joonas is sitting on the lap of his mum, sucking on his thumb.
Joonas:
Yeah Jaakko and I played together for two years 'til we formed our first band. We played for about three years with this band.
Jaakko:
We always had changes regarding the members back than.
Joonas:
Now only our bassplayer is one of the original members besides us.

Suiciderock: Any special reasons why you had so many changes in the line-up?
Joonas:
It had something to do with development I think.
Jaakko:
We were simply looking for proper guys who can play with us. We think we have the perfect line-up now.
Joonas:
I played guitar before I started to sing.
Jaakko:
Actually Joonas started to play bass guitar.
Joonas:
I didn't sing at all.
Jaakko:
In 1997/1998 Joonas started to sing and to play guitar.
Joonas:
I think it is hard to sing and to play guitar at the same time. So now we are having another guitar player.

Suiciderock: Describe each of your band members by using one word.
Joonas:
There are so many words, I could use. *smiles*
Jaakko:
Arzka - I would say he is cool or masculine. Juha - ...
Joonas:
Maybe nervous would fit to him. Redneck is the better word to describe him. A redneck in a good way. Kimberly is always late.
Jaakko:
Saurus our bass player is nature. He is so natural.
Joonas:
Jaakko he is our drummer. No, he is the guy who keeps everything together.
Suiciderock: Like a mum does.
Joonas:
Yeah he is our mother. *everybody laughs* I`m the motor of the band.
Jaakko:
If someone asks me I always say two words: A good friend, because that's what he really is to me.

Suiciderock: Was it always your intention to make something serious out of the band?
Joonas:
The band still is a hobby. Of course, we take it serious, but still not too serious.
Jaakko:
I think it is both for us hobby and a serious thing, but we try to get the band on a level, which is more serious.
Suiciderock: So you have normal day jobs besides the band?
Jaakko:
Not everybody has. I have a normal day job, Saurus our bass player has a normal day job and Juha. Ari is in the university.
Joonas:
Kimberly is also a student. He studies some media related stuff. I do nothing.
Jaakko:
He is a fulltime musician.

Suiciderock: Does your bandname have a special meaning for you?
Joonas:
It was invented by Juha. I think it has a different meaning for all of us. For me it's a beautiful woman.
Jaakko:
I didn`t think about that before so much. I think it's just a cool bandname for this kind of music. It fits perfect to the music.

Suiciderock: Every band has its own musical heroes. Yours are?
Joonas:
There are lot of bands that have influenced us.
Jaakko:
Well, I was born in '76. The first album I`ve bought was from Kiss „Animalize". After that Mötley Crue, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden and all kind of that. I`m totally into 80's metal. I like melodic metal. I also like progressive metal. I really like Halloween, Gammaray, German metal is great.
Joonas:
I was born in '82. I was listening a lot to Nirvana. Than Kiss. There are so many bands.
Jaakko:
What about your Megadeath and Pantera years?
Joonas:
Pantera is one of my favourite band. Iron Maiden.

Suiciderock: You still know why you wanted to become a musician? Any special happening?
Jaakko:
I think there was nothing special. I guess for me it always has been a natural thing to play drums and to sing. I listen to music all the time mostly when I`m driving in my car and at home. It's a natural thing for me. It's a really big part of my life.
Joonas:
The same is for me. I love to play live shows.I love the contact with the audience. It's also such a big part of my life as well. There are so many things related to music...

Suiciderock: Do you still recall your first musical memory?
Jaakko:
I was something like four or five years old when I heard this finnish dance music. Oh yeah my parents bought a little guitar for me as well as a little drumkit. At this time I was probably three or four years old.
Joonas:
I remember something but it doesn't have to do so much with music. Me and my cousin we were in the age of 10 and my dad was a jewelery manufacturer at this time. So we were wearing this crazy jewelery stuff all the time. We didn't have any wholes in the ears or whatever but we tried to put that stuff on. That was quite funny. We were so proud. *laughs* Yeah we had a really good time. I got my first guitar when I was eleven.

Suiciderock: Let's talk about the roles in your band. Who is responsible for the lyrics?
Joonas:
Mainly I'm responsible for the songwriting. Kimberly has done two songs and Juha has written one song.

Suiciderock: What inspires you for the songwriting?
Joonas:
Life in general is a great inspiration. I see and hear so many things happening around me. I write about my life or other people life's that inspires me.

Suiciderock: How would you describe your life shows to someone who has never seen it?
Joonas:
It's a great mix of melodic and slow metal. It has this energetic touch. It's a wide range of music.
Jaakko:
At least we hope there is. *smiles* I always sit there in the back and just see backs and arses. It always looks the same. So I can say there is a lot of humour going on on stage, because we like to have fun.
Joonas:
There is also one thing which I haven`t noticed before. About two month ago Saurus told me that we have this relaxed feeling on the stage. We communicate with the audience. It feels like in our rehearsal room. We just have fun there.

Suiciderock: Do you still remember your worst and your best life show?
Joonas:
The worst was in 2001.
Jaakko:
No no no. It was in 2003. Our bass player was so drunk.
Joonas:
I was so drunk, too. The same happened to our guitar players.
Jaakko:
No. Only Juha and me were sober that day. Actually we have been the headliner for a small festival. We thought the gig went well, but when we saw the video of that night we felt totally embarrassed. We played about an hour. The fans enjoyed it. No complains about the gig. The best gig so far was in Jyväskylä at Lutakko in 2004. That was our first show with a big stage. And our first and second gig here in Tampere at Klubi were also great.

Suiciderock: If you would organise your own festival, which bands would you invite to play?
Jaakko:
I actually organise a festival. If I could choose any bands, I want to...
Joonas:
I would invite Marylin Manson, Avanged Sevenfold, Type O' Negative, Metallica and some others. Iron Maiden...
Jaakko:
Mötley Crue, Kiss,...
Suiciderock: Would you also perform or would you just watch?
Joonas:
If that names would be on the list I would just kill myself. No, we would play there and after that I would kill myself.

Suiciderock: The future plans for your band?
Jaakko:
We are making new songs for the next album. There is one gig to play this month and than we are focusing on the next album and rehearsing the new material.
Suiciderock: Do you already know when it comes out?
Joonas:
No, we don`t know by now. I guess next spring. It will be harder.
Jaakko:
A bit slower...
Joonas:
The lyrics will be different than on „Darkness Between".
