UNIKLUBI
Kuopio Rock Cock 2006

"About success and finnish traditions"

Suiciderock: As your site is completely in finnish it`s a bit difficult for foreign fans to get some info about your band. Maybe you could be that nice and tell us a bit about your music style guys…
Teemu:
I think our music is melodic and melancolic rock´n roll. You know we don't invent something new. I think it`s just rock`n roll.
Antti:
Basic rock´n roll.

Suiciderock: The bands exists since 1999. What happened in this time?
Teemu:
Our founding members were Pasi and Jussi. I think they started with Cover songs. I joined the band in 2001 and Janne joined a bit after me in the same year. And than Antti joined in 2002. And he thought (points to Jussi) that the finnish language is more comfortable than to sing in English along with a bad finnish accent. Than he started to write songs and they started to perform them. Well, say something you f***ing whores.
Antti:
We got signed in 2003.
Teemu:
Than the first single came out in February of 2004.  Than we`ve just been touring for like 2,5 years. We had some little breaks. The longes has been 2 or 3 months.
Antti:
Than our second record came out in 2005.
Teemu:
We`ve just been touring a lot.

Suiciderock: What was your opinion about the musicindustry before you got in and what is it now?
Teemu:
Well, yeah a bit.
[Antti and Jonne from Negative came in to say hi... ]
Teemu:
Sorry. What was the question?
Suiciderock: What was your opinion about the musicindustry before you got in and what is it now?
Teemu:
The opinion hasn't changed that much. I think we`ve developed as a band. You know when it comes to composing and writting the songs. The band was much more involved for the second album. We did it much more together. We did the arrangements by ourselves. The first album was more mixed of old and a couple of new songs. The songs of the first album were from the era of the first 2, 3 or 4 years and the second album was composed and written in about 5 months. I think it`s much more compact.

Suiciderock: Have you been prepared for or surprised of your success?
Teemu (smiles):
Of course, we knew that we will have success. We knew that this is gonna be big. No, of course, we were gladly surprised and we`ve also been rehearsing very hard.

Suiciderock: Your band name "Uniklubi" means "Dreamclub". Who came up with the name?
Antti:
Yap.
Jussi:
I don`t know.
Teemu:
Noone knows.
Suiciderock: So you just woke up and knew that you will be called Uniklubi?
Teemu (jokes):
No, we did a lot of drugs.
Jussi (laughs):
It was a bad time for me.
Teemu:
It's just a name. You know it doesn`t even mean anything. Everyone was asking that and the answer is always like this.

Suiciderock: Your second record "Kehä" was released in 2005. When can we expect the 3rd studiowork?
Teemu:
Yeah, I think we will go to the studio in fall. We have some new ideas.
Antti:
I think it will be released next summer.
Teemu:
Or spring 2007.

Suiciderock: What will it sound like? Will it be typical Uniklubi?
Janne:
It will be a bit more heavy.
Pasi:
But still Uniklubi.
Janne:
Of course, we can't tell anything yet, because of the new songs.
Teemu:
Yeah, but I think it`s gonna be in the same form as the foregoing albums. It will be a bit more powerful.
Janne:
More powerfull guitars.

Suiciderock: You said it`s very important for you to sing in finnish. But at the beginnings of the bands`s career you were singing in English. Why did you change the language and why is it so important for you to sing in finnish?
Jussi:
Yeah.
Teemu:
It was more comfortable to sing in Finnish and the first songs were like cover songs from Guns´n Roses.

Suiciderock: Your lyrics are about relationships. Do you treat only your own experiences in your songs or do you also get inspired by the lifes of other people?
Jussi:
We steal everything. (laughs)
Suiciderock: So you steal it in English and translate it into Finnish?
Jussi (laughs):
Yes. You have to taste this. It's Kalakukku [note: Finnish fish pastry]
Teemu:
I know it looks like shit. It's typical for Kuopio.

Suiciderock: Where is the best place to write lyrics?
Teemu:
I do most of the lyrics during the night time at a graveyard. (laughs) I eat this finnish fish pastry. No, it was a joke. Just at home alone. The inspirations comes when you feel depressed.

Suiciderock: What would you do if you weren`t in a band?
Teemu:
I would be the guy who is holding the microphone in the porn movies.
Suiciderock: Not the main actor?
Teemu:
No no. I think that would be fun.
Jussi:
I would be a police man.
Antti:
I would be a drunk guy.
Suiciderock: A professional drinker?
Antti:
Yeah.
Pasi:
I would be a fisher.
Janne:
I wouldn`t do anything.

Suiciderock: I heard that Jussi acted in a movie.
Jussi:
No, I didn`t.
Suiciderock: Yes you did!? But somebody told me you did?
Jussi:
It was for school, but you`re right.

Suiciderock: At the moment you are touring through Finland. What are you doing to remain fit?
Janne:
Do we look like we are fit?
Teemu:
We do nothing. Just drink. I think that's what rock`n roll is all about.
Pasi:
We`re having fun. Finnish people look like this when they have fun.
Teemu: It's always when it is summer time, you play at a lot of festivals where you meet many bands, which are your friends. Than it's like party, party all the time...

Suiciderock: What are you doing to pass the time between the shows? Besides drinking and having fun?
Antti:
I`m staying home with my family.
Teemu:
Me and Pasi go to a bar. I think I just spend time with my girlfriend. We go to movies and we are holding hands.

Suiciderock: The craziest story related to your job as a musican that ever happened?
Janne:
You know this little snack bars on festivals?
Teemu:
We had this crazy idea that I can jump into one of those snack bars. So Pasi and I did and this f... thing was shaking and moving and they were screaming at us. But noone got kicked out.

Suiciderock: Besides Finland you played in some other countries. Is there another country you`d like to play for example Germany?
Teemu:
Yeah surely.
Antti:
Probably we will. Yeah. It's just a question of time.
Teemu:
When the time and the places are right. We did a couple of shows in Austria and the Czech Republic last summer. Of course we played as good as we can. But it was more like holidays for us. We are looking forward to come to Germany. It is quite exiting for us and we heard that there are a plenty of German fans waiting for us. It's kind of weird I think. Everything is new when you go abroad. When we did the shows in Vienna and what was the other place called? I guess Zlin or something like that.
Suiciderock: Was it the Masters of Rock?
Teemu:
Yeah it was. Things are pretty different than here. I`m interested to see how it goes abroad.

Suiciderock: What will the future bring for Uniklubi?
Teemu:
I think we will all die at the age of 27.
Antti:
It's too late for me.
Teemu:
He went to same class with Jesus. (laughs) Our future plans are just to end this tour and make our third album. It's always good if you don`t think too much. Forget the notes and play.

Suiciderock: Your last words for Suiciderock readers?
Teemu:
Ich möchte Scheiße essen [note: I want to eat shit] Ich brauche meine Vaseline [I need my vaseline] Ich komme [I`ll come] We are waiting to conquer the German land. Auf Wiedersehen. [Goodbye]
